Vodafone has partnered with Dell, NEC, Samsung, Wind River, Capgemini Engineering, and Keysight Technologies to build Europe’s first commercial open Radio Access Network (RAN). Vodafone and the six partners will also build one of the largest Open RAN labs in England, and digital skills hubs in Malaga, Spain, and Germany. Telcos and govts are encouraging the development of Open RAN tech to help more vendors enter into the space dominated by Huawei, Ericsson, and Nokia.
A team of Google researchers has created an AI model that designs next-gen chips faster than human designers. The model could build a design that optimises the placement of components on a chip within six hours. The team used a dataset of 10,000 chip layouts for an ML model and trained it using RL. The new AI-generated layouts were used in Google’s latest AI accelerator (TPU-v5). AI uses past experience to become better and faster.
Samsung is planning to expand the use of their 7th gen V-NAND chip solutions. It is planning to launch a new SSD based on its 7th gen V-NAND tech, which claims to have the smallest cell size in the industry. This will help in multitasking huge workloads, such as simultaneous 3D modeling and video editing. Samsung is the largest NAND flash vendor with a 33.5% revenue share in Q1. They had a business of $4.97bn in the period which was 7% more than last quarter.
In a survey conducted by Ipsos Mori, 80% of the Indians felt that the government and public services in India have rightly put digital tech to use in our fight against COVID-19. As many as 1,000 respondents from India between the age group 18 and 50, and 12,100 respondents across 12 countries participated in the survey. Respondents in India were comfortable with tech replacing face-to-face interaction as 63% are willing to give personal data to access a service.
Capgemini is building a team in India to cater to the growing demand of 5G, Edge computing in the country. It has recently announced the opening of a 5G lab in Mumbai where clients can prototype and test their 5G implementation projects. 5G has become a focus area for Capgemini after the acquisition of Altran, a French engineering-consulting firm. Ashwin Yardi, India CEO of Capgemini said that there was an exponential rise in products and services being embedded with software.
Samsung has announced the launch of the first-ever Zoned namespace SSD targeting enterprise servers. PM1731a is the new SSD that features a 2.5-inch form factor, dual ports, and will be available with either 2TB or 4TB storage. It is made using Samsung’s 6th-gen V-NAND. Data with similar frequency and access type in ZNS is stored in the same zone. The new SSD can achieve a write amplification factor and has a 4x lifespan.
On Monday IIT Madras announced that it will join forces with IBM on quantum computing as students and faculty at the institute will get access to tech giant’s quantum systems over the cloud. The collaboration will enhance research in quantum computing and enable students to prepare for careers. The syllabus will be jointly taught by IIT M professors and IBM researchers with hands-on lab sessions. Over the past few years, India has seen a lot of growth in quantum computing.
Airtel, one of the most popular network brands in Punjab, that covers 99.89% of the population, is looking to improve network speed by deploying a new 25MHz spectrum. 20MHz will be deployed in the 2300MHz band and 5MHz in the 1800MHz band, giving Airtel lead in both the bands. With this new deployment, Airtel has the largest spectrum bank of 65MHz in the state. Pre-5G massive MIMO, 4G advanced Carrier Aggregation have also been deployed.
In the Computex keynote, Intel announced the launch of its new 11th Gen Intel Core mobile U-series processors with Intel Iris Xe graphics — i7-1195G7 and i5-1155G7. The U-series presents two new 5.0GHz processors. 250 OEM designs are on the way based on 11th Gen processors and 60 new consumer designs using the two processors. Intel also revealed its first 5G M.2 solution with worldwide carrier certification.
