Workspace, Google’s integrated communication and collaboration solution, is now available to all Google account holders. Gmail, Chat, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Meet, and other Workspace features are available to the company’s 3 bn+ users. A user can enable the integrated experience starting Monday by turning on Google Chat. Google also introduced a subscription offering ‘Workspace Individual’ to help entrepreneurs grow, run, and protect the business.
A team of Google researchers has created an AI model that designs next-gen chips faster than human designers. The model could build a design that optimises the placement of components on a chip within six hours. The team used a dataset of 10,000 chip layouts for an ML model and trained it using RL. The new AI-generated layouts were used in Google’s latest AI accelerator (TPU-v5). AI uses past experience to become better and faster.
A few weeks ago Israel signed a billion-dollar deal with AWS and Google to provide cloud services to its public sector and military. AWS, as a part of the deal, now announced it will open data centers in Israel. Google and AWS won the tender for a four-phase project in April called “Nimbus”. The new data centers are expected to start building by the first half of 2023. “Today, AWS announced it will open an infrastructure region in Israel in the first half of 2023”, AWS said in a statement.
Amazon, Google, and Visa, separately, are trying to acquire a stake in Bengaluru-based neo-banking startup Open. Open’s valuation, post-deal, will multiple three times to hit $600-700 mn. Open’s growth, in the last 18 months, has jumped ten times. The start-up offers business banking, payments, and expense management services to over a million SMEes. It is, at present, valued at $100-$120 mn and claims to have processed $24 bn in transactions annually.
Google is in the works to launch new safety features along with a new scanning tool for risky downloads. This will be done to safeguard users from phishing attempts. ‘Enhanced safe browsing’ launched in 2020, will provide additional protection. Google claims, ‘Enhanced safe browsing’ users are 35% less phished than other users. Last year after the Chrome web store was integrated with Google safe browsing, chrome disabled 81% of extensions to protect users.
Google, following its biggest rival Apple, is willing to give users the choice to opt-out of advertisement tracking on the android apps. With a new safety section, users can see what data developers collect about them, and also permit additional privacy and security information. Unlike Apple, it won’t be a default option. The new update will feature in android 12 devices later this year and be available to lower android versions by 2022.
Byju and Google have joined hands to bring Google workspace for education and Byju’s content tutelage on the ‘Vidyartha’ platform. All the participating educational institutions will have free access to the platform having chapter-wise slides, data banks, summary docs, handouts, tests, and readymade assignments. The new digitized platform will make it easier for classroom management and aid to organize, access, and track classroom learning.
Google cloud launched three new ML-based services that will provide real-time data insights to users. The three services: Datastream allows users to replicate databases in real-time. Analytics hub lets users curate, create, and manage analytics exchanges securely and in real-time. Dataplex is a combination of Google cloud and open-source that allows users’ analyze their data at scale. A survey by Gartner found the average cost of poor data quality at $12.8mn per year.
