Rekha M Menon, Accenture India’s chairperson, has created history by becoming the first female chairperson of the IT industry body NASSCOM in its 30-years of history. She succeeds outgoing chairman and Infosys COO U B Pravin Rao. NASSCOM also announced a new Executive Council, having 40% representation by women leaders from ER&D, BPM, IT Services, GCC, SME, and Startups. TCS President Krishnan Ramanujam has been appointed as vice-chairperson.
60% of Haryana-based start-ups may not invest in the state following the law which stipulates 75% job reservation for locals with a monthly salary of up to Rs 50,000 in the private sector. Nasscom, in a survey, said that the law which comes into effect from May 1, is going to hit hard to start-ups as 67.3% of their workforce earn below Rs 50,000 per month. Besides, startups involved in deeptech, edtech need high-end AI and ML skill resources, which is hard to find locally.
AI has the potential to play a major role in the transformation of India’s agriculture sector from today’s stressful conditions and accelerating a shift towards data-driven farming, said a Nasscom-Ernst & Young report. ” The Netherlands is a stellar example of effective AI adoption in agriculture. With just a small arable land the country has become the world’s 2nd largest exporter of agricultural products by value leveraging tech and AI,” said Debjani Ghosh, president, Nasscom.
Nasscom and Microsoft have announced ‘AI Gamechangers’ programme to boost the adoption of AI in India. The objective is to develop and promote AI tech across key sectors. Debjani Ghosh, President of, Nasscom said the country is moving forward to create a global innovation hub and AI was expected to unlock about $500 bn of value by 2025. The programme gives an opportunity to startups, enterprises, NGOs, etc to showcase AI-based
products and solutions.
Cisco, Nasscom FutureSkills Prime, and AICTE have come together to offer over 20,000 virtual internship opportunities in cybersecurity. This program is an extension of cisco’s Networking Academy programme comprising of two phases. Nasscom said, 20,000 virtual internships on cybersecurity will be offered in phase one followed by internship opportunities on new skills in phase two. The internship opportunity will allow students to learn enhanced skills.
India has added over 1,600 tech startups in the year 2020 to become the third-largest tech startup hub in the world, Nasscom said. The number is the highest addition during the last three years and takes the total tally to 12,500, including 12 new unicorns. The overall tech sector grew 2.3% YoY following acceleration in digital transformation and tech adoption, due to the pandemic. The sector contributed around 8% to the national GDP.
Nasscom and Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council have jointly launched a contest, JANCare, to develop tech solutions for the delivery of health care solutions in small towns and rural part of the country. The aim is to identify up to 25 health-tech start-ups and SMEs to provide pilot test-beds in collaboration with state govt at PHCs, CHCs and industry to help validation and scale-up for adoption.
Madhya Pradesh’s government has signed an MOU with Nasscom and Microsoft to provide better placement opportunity to engineering and polytechnic students. Students who successfully complete these courses will be given priority during their placements. The course aims to skill all students in AI by delivering Microsoft’s AI, machine learning and data science expertise through different modules — live demos, hands-on workshop, assignments etc.
Nasscom and McKinsey, in a joint report, said there has been a 30% jump in digital transformation deals. The report titled Future of Technology Services – Navigating the New Normal said that it has found 80% jump in cloud spending since the pandemic. Tech natives and digital reinventors with revenue over $3 bn have driven 65% of the $ 6 tril growth in market capitalisation between Jan to July 2020.
