China data breach likely to fuel identity fraud and smishing

<p>Businesses in China should prepare for an increase in smishing attacks and identity theft after allegations that the personal information of 1 billion citizens has been posted online. If the large-scale data leak is real, it might lead to phone swapping or other identity-fraud schemes, which might affect a Chinese user&#39;s social credit rating. The hackers provided a sample dump and asserted that the information was from the Shanghai National Police.</p>
