India Proposes Digital Data Protection Rules with Strict Penalties
The Indian government has released draft Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules, introducing stringent cybersecurity requirements and penalties up to ₹250 crore (approximately $30 million) for non-compliance. The rules mandate data fiduciaries to implement robust security measures, conduct annual Data Protection Impact Assessments, and ensure citizens' rights to data erasure and informed consent.
